The quick release for the Aevon hitch, what’s the use ?

A few years ago, Aevon developed a quick release for the hitch of their bike trailers.

As a reminder, the distinctive feature of Aevon single wheel trailers is to get fixed to the seat post with a hitch. There are about 20 different hitch sizes to adapt to the majority of seat posts.
To be fixed at the level of the seat post ensures perfect handling ability of the trailer. You feel no movement when you’re going downhill very fast and you can even make a U-turn without putting your feet on the ground.
This system is also what makes the success of these bike trailers. It’s the same principle when you learn to ride a bike and your parents support you below the saddle.

 

In order to gain time, here comes the quick release for the hitch.
It is composed of a pin, a nylon cord and an axis.

This system helps to remove the beam of the trailer from the hitch quickly, it only takes a few seconds. It’s very useful when you need to remove or attach your trailer to your bike often or if you travel with several people with several bikes so you can transfer the trailer from a bike to another.

 

Many Aevon travellers decide to go on a trip with several people using only one trailer. The STD 100 bike trailer can carry up to 45kg of stuff. This can be enough when you leave for a short trip of only a few days. In that case, travellers can decide to take turns pulling the trailer.

Tip : don’t hesitate to glue the washers on the beam to avoid for them to fall when you remove your trailer from your bike. To tape it, use epoxy glue, after having removed the grease from the beam and the washers.

Travelling by bike in Canada

We’d like to take you on a bike trip, to discover this beautiful country : Canada.
Take your KIT L80 bike trailer on the plane and follow us !

The road we chose can be done in about a week if you cycle for 30 to 60km a day so you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes.
During this trip, you will cycle mainly on cycle paths and sometimes use secondary roads with few traffic.

Starting from Québec, take the public transports to the Lac St Jean where you can start your bike trip.
Going around the Lac St-Jean is a wonderful way to start this bike trip. You will use the famous véloroute des bleuets, 256km long. If you have enough time, spend a day at the wild zoo at St Félicien, it’s worth the detour. West from the lake, you will go past a Native American reservation in which you can visit a museum.
Finally, at the South of the lake is a History and archeological center, at Métabetchouane, you can also stop by the Trou de la Fée cave if you feel bold enough for the steep climb.

Cycle down to the Kénogami lake to admire the hills that separate the regions of Saguenay from the Lac St-Jean. This day by bike will be in the middle of nature until you reach the Sables river near Jonquière.

A visit to Chicoutimi city, located at the confluence between the rivers Chicoutoumi and Saguenay, is recommended before going back on the saddle in the direction of the Baie.

If you feel like it, take the shuttle to discover the Saguenay fjord, this unique landscape created for thousands of years by huge glaciers. The shuttle stops at the level of one of the most beautiful villages in Québec : Sainte-Rose-du-Nord, and stops at Tadoussac where you can rest for one night.
From Tadoussac, don’t hesitate to go on a whale trip.

Back on your bike, discover the regional park of Hautes-Gorges of the Malbaie river, 224.9km2, a unique region because of the diversity of flora. You will be amazed by the waterfalls, the highest being 160m high. And maybe you’ll be lucky enough to meet a caribou on the summits.

Travelling in a sustainable way

Users of Aevon trailers are travellers. Choosing to travel by bike is a way to choose sustainable tourism.

Today, travelling is very common and the very low prices enable everyone to travel, whether it’s near or far away.

However, travelling to a distant destination requires to take the plane and as everyone knows now, airlines are one of the biggest polluters.

What does it mean : being a sustainable tourist ?

Travelling in a sustainable way means that you need to take into account : the sustainable development, the protection of the environment, the economical and social impact on the local people.

Here are a few tips found by our travellers to become a sustainable tourist.

Travelling by bike

It’s a fact : moving around with the only help of your legs is better for the planet than using a car or a plane.
You just need to add an Aevon trailer to your bike so you’re free to travel where you like inside a country and why not, go for several months in total autonomy.

Travelling by plane

Of course, when you need to go far away, there is no other choice than taking the plane.
In that case, try to choose a direct flight. Making a stopover isn’t environmental friendly.
Once you’re on site, enjoy the places you’re visiting instead of jumping on the next plane to your next destination. If it’s possible, take the bus to go from one place to the next so you can enjoy the landscapes and really discover the country.

Choose the right time

Mass tourism has an impact on the local people.
The best example is Venice : the city suffers from the influx of tourists during the high season. Anyway, you can’t enjoy a place with as much pleasure when it’s crowded with tourists.
For sustainable tourism, choose to leave out of season. The locals won’t be dependent on the seasons.

Choose the place where you stay

Aevon travellers understand that : camping is the most eco friendly to travel.

If you prefer to have a roof over your head, check out if your hotel has the HQE label (hight environmental quality) or choose to sleep in somebody’s home so you can share the energetic ressources.

Buy local

During your trips, don’t hesitate to buy souvenirs made on site by the locals, ideally in front of your eyes so you’re sure where the object comes from. This has a positive impact on local economy and the object you’ll bring back home will have more value.

Drink in a sustainable way

During his trip from Mexico to Ushuaïa, Bertrand chose the solution of the water filter so he didn’t have to buy water bootles. There are hundreds of different models, don’t hesitate to take the advice from a specialist before making your choice.

In a country with drinkable water, keep your flask or your bottle with you. In a country with non drinkable water and if you don’t have a water filter, buy big sizes bottles instead of small ones.

Where can I travel from November to February ?

Winter is slowly settling in at Aevon in France. Temperatures are even dropping to zero in a few days !

What are the best spots to go to from November to February ?

South America

Argentina

Argentina is located in the South hemisphere, which means seasons are reversed. The country is so large that you can find climates completely different from North to South.
Let’s concentrate on the area around Buenos Aires. The hottest month of the year is January with days at 30°degrees. Prefer Spring to visit this part of the country, from September to December. It’s the rainy season from November but usually these quick showers don’t last.

Mexico

The months of October and November are the months to pick to go to Mexico. You’ll avoid the rainy season but also the heat from the arid plateaus in the North. Temperatures are also nice at this period on the seaside.

Australia

From December to January, it’s summer in the South of Australia. Temperatures are perfect to visit the area and enjoy nights in the open. However, you’d better avoid the center of the country, very hot. On the contrary, the North could be particularly rainy then.

Asia

Laos

The dry season lasts from November to March. Temperatures are nice and you don’t feel as much dampness. It’s the ideal time to visit and play the tourist.

Vietnam

There is a difference between the North and the South of the country.
If you’re travelling from November to December, choose the North of the country. Temperatures are cool, especially at night. You’ll avoid the heat and violent rains from July and August.
If you’re travelling from December to February, choose the South of the country. You’ll get a dry and sunny weather, ideal to pedal in the best conditions.

South Europe

Some countries from theSouth of Europe and the Mediterranean bassin enjoy nice weather in Winter : Crete for example. The weather is mild and you’ll avoid the crowds of tourists.

Travelling with your dog

Katrin always travels with her dog Napoli. She shares her travelling experience with a bike and trailer.

When Katrin first tested her UNO 100 trailer, she used it to carry her luggage. For her, it was the ideal solution to travel through the Alps with a tent and stuff. And when you’re staying in the same place for a few days, you just release the trailer from your bike and go for a ride.

Katrin chose the UNO 100 instead of the STD 100 because the frame of the UNO 100 was lower and her dog Napoli could easily climb inside by himself. The UNO 100 isn’t equipped with a shock absorber so Katrin used a thick mattress for Napoli to sit or lie on it.
On bumpy roads, Napoli still tends to sit instead of lying.

 

“I was very excited to try the trailer. Checking the world wide web for the combination „dog“ and „single-wheel trailer“, I couldn‘t find any comprehensive information about the pro and cons. The videos I saw did either show a dog, that was fixed tightly in his trailer or a much lightweight version of my 20 kg friend.”

The UNO 100 is not originally designed to carry a dog but it does the job perfectly. Just be careful when your dog moves around, it might be a little unconfortable when you’re cycling fast. You need to get used to your passenger’s movements.

On Instagram, Katrin found this beautiful picture of Frida and Tilda, riding in an Aevon STD 100. The dogs are so small that they both fit in one trailer together. Their owner chose a container to protect them when he is braking. It also protects the dogs from the sun and the rain.

From Sweden to Finland

This summer, Nicolas went on a bike trip to Sweden and Finland with his MTB and KIT L80 bike trailer. We followed him on his way.

In the direction of Stockholm, the tracks were not always passable with a MTB, our cyclist essentially cycled on roads.

This single track of a few miles deserved a picture :
Sweden

Upon his arrival in the Swedish capital, Nicolas noticed a parking area on an island close to the old part of the town. Clean and quiet, there was a nice watering place and a lawn. After visiting Stockholm for a day, Nicolas took the ferry in the direction of Finland.

At this point, he had cycled for 11 days in Sweden with an amazing variety of landscapes : forest, hills, lakes and the Baltic coast.

At 10pm on the ferry leaving Sweden, Nicolas caught sight of this beautiful sunset :

The road to Finland started under the rain. “The first miles to get out of town are very nice, with a track along a river and a first place to stay for the night along a lake with many birds set up on small islands.”

He then cycled in the direction of the city of Tampere at 170km further North.
” There are no hills, only forests, fiels and racing stables.”

Nicolas tried to follow the ‘hiking’ route registered on his app and stumbled upon areas where the trees were being cut. It was hard to find a way by bike with the boughs on the ground and the ruts made by the vehicles.
Tired, the cyclist set up camp on a small patch of land with access to a lake.

The day after, he ended up his trip at Tampere and stopped along the lake Näsijärvi. It was the perfect time to use his kayak again.

This first part of the trip in Finland wasn’t that interesting. Examining the rest of the itinerary, Nicolas found that the only way to cross the lake region was by the road.
So he decided to take the train to reach the East of the country.

From France to Sweden

This summer, Nicolas went on a bike trip on the tracks of Sweden, Finland and Norway by MTB with his KIT L80 bike trailer.

He tells us about the first days of his trip in Sweden, from Goteborg to the Baltic coast.

First step : travelling through Switzerland to go from France to Sweden. It’s time to make the first picture on the train.

After a short visit of Kiel by bike, Nicolas then took the ferry to Goteborg in Sweden to start his bike trip.

From France to Sweden, the trip took 2 days and a half.

At Goteborg, several cycling paths lead to the forest that borders the town. In Sweden, it’s easy to find yourself in complete nature, in the middle of magnificent forests and lakes.

The first days, Nicolas cycled through tracks and forests with a few showers that forced him to take shelter from time to time. In Sweden the weather isn’t always mild but it didn’t affect our traveller who appreciated the view and the ever-present nature.

During this trip, the cyclist trusted his fishing skills to improve his meals. The first time he put his small kayak in the water, he caught a 40cm pike, which made a real nice dinner.

Unfortunately, that night was quite short : “I forgot to put my mask on so I woke up at dawn which comes at 3.30am! Knowing that night comes only after midnight. Still, it’s quite pleasant to have enough time to find a nice place to set up my tent for the night without being rushed by the sun setting..”

The roads east changed and became a little more flat. Much dryer too. Sweden seems affected by drought in some areas. Tracks are always kept neat and tidy, which seems to be something deeply anchored in Swedish culture.

After a few days, Nicolas reached the Baltic coast and the marina of Nävekvarn.

Carrying my paddleboard on my Aevon trailer

Koen lives in Belgium. Happy owner of a paddle board, he needed to find a way to carry it on his KIT L80 Aevon trailer.
With a friend they launched into the project of conceiving a paddle-stand for bike trailer.

“I had the impulsive idea of buying myself a paddle board… Nice, but not so easy to carry around. Luckily, I had this fantastic KIT L80 trailer that seemed perfectly suited to carry a paddle-board. So a friend and I began thinking of a home-made paddle stand.

Luckily my dear friend has crazy insight and saw it straight away, while I was seeing so much different options. We set up a triangular system and put it highly enough on the rear part of the trailer so the paddle would be at the same level all along.

The rest was already on the trailer and we just had to help ourselves. We used the fixing holes already present on the rear of the trailer to fix the triangle.

To thighten the board to the trailer I got old innertubes from bikes.
The front bar is a tube welded to a steel bar with hooks.

To improve the system, I’m thinking of adding some foam on the frame of the trailer. I would also like to find a way to prevent damage on the fixing holes.

Now I can carry my paddle, but also my planks, bikes, windows, a mattress… you name it !

Has anyone already thoughy of transforming his bike trailer to carry firewood ? That would be the next project 🙂 !”

STD 100

1600km by bike in Uruguay and Brazil

Bertrand’s brother went to meet him in Colonia de Sacramento in Uruguay. Their goal : to cycle for 1600km until Florianopolis.

Quickly, the brothers are charmed by the quietness of the people. They spend their first night in the small village of La Paz where they find a spot at the nautical club.

The first days by bike are quite wet, so the cyclists push harder on the pedals to go faster.

Uruguay travel

After a week pedalling, the brothers reach the Atlantic coast, where they take a day’s rest. There, the sun ‘looks like the one we have at home, in France…’

Back on their saddle, the cyclists cross the frontier with Brazil, with a head wind and long straight roads.

“The weather in Brazil is much dryer than in Uruguay but also hotter and sunnier. For now, we can’t feel the winter. Nights are cool and days are sunny so we can get a tan while we’re cycling. Palm trees are more and more numerous, as well as sandy side tracks, which mean a beach isn’t far. ”

They take a break at Rio Grande do Sul, before taking the ferry to get out of the industrial bay of the city.

“The environment evolves. I feel like we’re in the Landes (in the South-West of France.) Straight roads, sand and pines everywhere. It helps us as it stops a strong side wind.”

The brothers cycle in the direction of Florianopolis, the end of this bike trip of 2 years and 6 months with an STD 100 trailer.

At Araranguá, a floodlike rain forces the travellers to stop for two days. On the first day, there is as much rain as in a usual month.

“When we talk with the people here, we understand that the climate changes can be seen here as well a little more every day… ”

Back on the road, the cyclists will see in the distance the town that will mean the end of the trip of 1650km.

“This last day by bike won’t leave me time to think, to analyse, to react to these news : it’s the last day of my bike trip…”

Upon their arrival, the brothers find themselves a hostel 50m from the beach. The month to come will be all about spending time surfing.

“It’s always a nice feeling to put down the bike. It’s a little like a ‘holiday feeling’ inside of this long trip…

I already hear you saying I’ve been on holidays for two years and 6 months… Don’t be mistaken, it’s a journey. It helped me get out of my confort zone, learn simple things and simple pleasures, live with a little, put down the barriers we put for ourselves and which are so far from our real capacities.

Well, we can talk about it when I get back next October around a beer :-)… “
