Travelling by bike is healthy

11 August 2020 | By | No Comments

To stay fit and healthy means to be as regularly active as possible. What could be a better way to do that than using the holidays to experience it?
If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, going on a bike trip will help you get your cardio back at the pace that’s the most confortable for you. Just prepare your bike, put everything you need in a single-wheel bike trailer and get on cycle paths. Many websites help you find the best cycle path possible.

Cycling is easy

Cycling is accessible to almost anyone because it’s a low-impact activity and people from all ages can do it. Also, it’s cheap and fun and you don’t need a lot of planning or training.

Cycling is healthy

When you ride your bike you use most of the major muscle groups. There is low risk of injury compared to other activities such as running for instance.
And during your holidays, you can do it for long stretches of time at a low intensity which is one of the best ways to train your heart.

Cycling helps you control your weight

Working out in general raises your metabolic rate, builds muscle and burns fat. You can adjust the intensity and duration of the pedalling depending on the results needed. On a bike trip, you will probably be riding for a few hours every day and burn loads of calories. You can then indulge in some holiday snacks because you deserve it :-) . Cycling at a steady pace burns about 300 calories an hour.

Cycling makes you smile

A bike trip is the best way to get as much sun as possible (vitamin C) and to be outdoors every day. This, combined with the pedalling will reduce any stress you might have felt during the long working hours at the office.

Cycling is environment friendly

Forget about the plane or the car, use your legs and the planet will thank you. Due to recent events worldwide, people have opened up to new ways of living, in accordance with the environment. Using a bike everyday and during the holidays will considerably reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

Which website to prepare for your bike trip?

28 July 2020 | By | No Comments

Some of you plan to go on a bike trip this summer, along with your Aevon single-wheel bike trailer.

Traditional navigation apps such as Google Maps do not enable us to always find walking and cycling paths without crossing busy roads in France and Europe.
To help you go safely on a bike trip, we found a few websites to take as many cycle paths as possible. You will also find ideas for your next bike trip or stories of other bike travellers to get away for a few minutes.

France Vélo Tourisme

bike travel
This website enables you to go from one place to the next using as many cycling and walking paths as you can. On the homepage, you just need to click on ‘carte des itinéraires’ and then on ‘mon GPS’. Then choose the departure and destination. On the map you will find two possible routes, one of which uses mainly cycling paths.
The only failing is that the type of path is not specified. You may find yourself on dirt tracks sometimes.

bike trailer
The duration of the trips are quite long. They take into account a slow pedalling rythm. If you’re a sportsperson, make the calculations with the kilometers to get a better idea.

You can also use an already established route through ‘les itinéraires’ and select them depending on several criteria, one of which being the difficulty. This might be useful if you’re travelling with the kids.

Vélo en France (and in Europe)

This website is the official website of the French cycle touring federation. It helps to find very specific routes. You can enter the type of bike you use and get an overview of the accessibility of the trip, its difficulty. You can also know whether the route is long or sloping.
bike trip
This website is mostly for athletic cyclists and tells you about routes in France and in Europe: Spain, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, etc…

Eurovelo, the European website (available in English)

ebike
Find out about cross-border routes available in more than 30 countries. The map shows you roads created by professionals of the bike and tourism industry in Europe. You can see the map in PDF with a short description available in 4 different languages.
If you haven’t planned to go on a bike trip immediately, just browse on the website to give you a few ideas for the future trips.

Global biker, a blog

single wheel bike trailer
This blog gathers stories of people gone on a bike trip essentially in France, but also in Europe and the rest of the world. These are not precise routes but personal experiences. You will have to select the supplied information and you can search by places in the search bar.
The stories being personal, they have been checked out so you need to be careful with the info. This kind of website can really give you the craving for a bike trip.

Unfortunately, there are no apps for these websites.

This summer, I’ll travel locally

4 June 2020 | By | No Comments

Considering the current situation, we will have to travel locally this summer. And many of you have decided to travel by bike this year.
With the right equipment, that’s possible and you may even find it… pleasant.

bike travel

Physical shape

Whether you’re used to cycling or not, you will need to adapt the number of kilometers you’d like to cycle every day with your physical shape. A confirmed cyclist will certainly aim to ride for 100km each day. If you have less training, set your goal on 60km a day, at your own pace, in order to take pleasure in your bike trip. You can also plan to take a day or two to rest between each stopover so you can visit the place where you’re staying.

Accomodation

The first question you should ask yourself is whether you intend to sleep in a tent or if you prefer the confort of a real bedroom. Bivouacking means you’re free because you don’t have to book a place to stay unless you’d like to set up your tent in a touristic place.
If you prefer the conforts of a bed and breakfast or at someone’s place, this will mean a little more planning. You can still book your room a few nights in advance depending on your progress. There again, it will depend on the area, whether it attracts tourists or not.

Equipment

The choice of the bike is not really an issue. We know many world travellers who travel with basic bikes so they can find any spare part locally if necessary, which is not the case with a top of the range model. However, the choice of the saddle may need for you to make a few tests as you’re going to spend quite some hours on it.
If you can afford it, you can travel by electric bike, which is a very confortable solution and doesn’t prevent you from pedalling. So you will still work out.

To carry your stuff, a single-wheel bike trailer is the best fellow traveller. It gets fixed behind the saddle post so it won’t bother you going downhill or in bends. You can easily carry all the stuff you need for 2 people for several weeks. You can even put the bike trailer from one bike to another in a few minutes.
bike trip

The UNO 100 bike trailer (in steel) is the road model from the Aevon range. It is exclusively dedicated to a use on road and can carry up to 100L, 35kg.
The STD 100 bike trailer (in aluminium) is a cross country model because it is fitted with a shock absorber. It can carry up to 145L, 35kg in cross country mode or 45kg on roads.
The KIT L80 bike trailer (in aluminium) can also be used on cross country roads. It is foldable, which makes it the ideal partner if you need to take the train to your starting point. It can carry up to 25kg in cross country mode and 35kg on roads.

You just need to make your choice. The STD 100 trailer will be available mid August / beginning of September.

Shape the Way Project

4 March 2020 | By | No Comments

Shape the Way is the (slightly crazy) project of Maxime & Arthur : to cycle along the Atlantic coast from the South of Portugal to the North of Scotland with their bikes and Aevon bike trailer.
travel

Maxime has trained as an engineer. Arthur is a landscape creator. They have never really travelled by bike but… it doesn’t really seem to worry them!
bike trip
Their project was born from an observation: our hobbies are not always in agreement with the necessity to protect our environment. To surf, enthusiasts are ready to travel for miles looking for the biggest wave, spending hours in cars or on planes. Maxime & Arthur would like to prove that there are other ways to enjoy yourself.
In order to make their values and their passion coincide, the two travellers plan to travel and surf and respect the environment at the same time. Their trip will exclusively be environmentally friendly using means of transport with low impact such as the bike or the train. They will spend their nights camping or staying at people’s houses along the way.

Their bikes are made of spare parts found in a collaborative workshop that helps you repair your bike yourself.
They have built a surf rack that was added to the frame of the STD 100 bike trailer. The bike trailer will carry their camping gear and cameras.
single wheel bike trailer

Several stops are planned along the way to meet some active members of environmently friendly associations and partners who support the project: sportsmen, businessmen and such. Of course, Aevon’s team will meet them at the halfway point to talk about the first part of the trip.

All along their bike trip, Maxime & Arthur will make a web series and regular podcasts you can listen to on the most famous apps.

The departure will take place at the end of the month!

The quick release for the Aevon hitch, what’s the use ?

17 December 2019 | By | No Comments

A few years ago, Aevon developed a quick release for the hitch of their bike trailers.

As a reminder, the distinctive feature of Aevon single wheel trailers is to get fixed to the seat post with a hitch. There are about 20 different hitch sizes to adapt to the majority of seat posts.
To be fixed at the level of the seat post ensures perfect handling ability of the trailer. You feel no movement when you’re going downhill very fast and you can even make a U-turn without putting your feet on the ground.
This system is also what makes the success of these bike trailers. It’s the same principle when you learn to ride a bike and your parents support you below the saddle.

In order to gain time, here comes the quick release for the hitch.
It is composed of a pin, a nylon cord and an axis.

bike travel
single-wheel bike trailer

This system helps to remove the beam of the trailer from the hitch quickly, it only takes a few seconds. It’s very useful when you need to remove or attach your trailer to your bike often or if you travel with several people with several bikes so you can transfer the trailer from a bike to another.

Many Aevon travellers decide to go on a trip with several people using only one trailer. The STD 100 bike trailer can carry up to 45kg of stuff. This can be enough when you leave for a short trip of only a few days. In that case, travellers can decide to take turns pulling the trailer.

Tip : don’t hesitate to glue the washers on the beam to avoid for them to fall when you remove your trailer from your bike. To tape it, use epoxy glue, after having removed the grease from the beam and the washers.

Travelling by bike in Canada

11 December 2019 | By | No Comments

We’d like to take you on a bike trip, to discover this beautiful country : Canada.
Take your KIT L80 bike trailer on the plane and follow us !

canada trip

The road we chose can be done in about a week if you cycle for 30 to 60km a day so you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes.
During this trip, you will cycle mainly on cycle paths and sometimes use secondary roads with few traffic.

Starting from Québec, take the public transports to the Lac St Jean where you can start your bike trip.
Going around the Lac St-Jean is a wonderful way to start this bike trip. You will use the famous véloroute des bleuets, 256km long. If you have enough time, spend a day at the wild zoo at St Félicien, it’s worth the detour. West from the lake, you will go past a Native American reservation in which you can visit a museum.
Finally, at the South of the lake is a History and archeological center, at Métabetchouane, you can also stop by the Trou de la Fée cave if you feel bold enough for the steep climb.

Cycle down to the Kénogami lake to admire the hills that separate the regions of Saguenay from the Lac St-Jean. This day by bike will be in the middle of nature until you reach the Sables river near Jonquière.

A visit to Chicoutimi city, located at the confluence between the rivers Chicoutoumi and Saguenay, is recommended before going back on the saddle in the direction of the Baie.

If you feel like it, take the shuttle to discover the Saguenay fjord, this unique landscape created for thousands of years by huge glaciers. The shuttle stops at the level of one of the most beautiful villages in Québec : Sainte-Rose-du-Nord, and stops at Tadoussac where you can rest for one night.
From Tadoussac, don’t hesitate to go on a whale trip.

Back on your bike, discover the regional park of Hautes-Gorges of the Malbaie river, 224.9km2, a unique region because of the diversity of flora. You will be amazed by the waterfalls, the highest being 160m high. And maybe you’ll be lucky enough to meet a caribou on the summits.

Go back to Quebec for the end of the trip.

Travelling in a sustainable way

21 November 2019 | By | No Comments

Users of Aevon trailers are travellers. Choosing to travel by bike is a way to choose sustainable tourism.

Today, travelling is very common and the very low prices enable everyone to travel, whether it’s near or far away.

However, travelling to a distant destination requires to take the plane and as everyone knows now, airlines are one of the biggest polluters.

What does it mean : being a sustainable tourist ?

Travelling in a sustainable way means that you need to take into account : the sustainable development, the protection of the environment, the economical and social impact on the local people.

Here are a few tips found by our travellers to become a sustainable tourist.

Travelling by bike

It’s a fact : moving around with the only help of your legs is better for the planet than using a car or a plane.
You just need to add an Aevon trailer to your bike so you’re free to travel where you like inside a country and why not, go for several months in total autonomy.

Travelling by plane

Of course, when you need to go far away, there is no other choice than taking the plane.
In that case, try to choose a direct flight. Making a stopover isn’t environmental friendly.
Once you’re on site, enjoy the places you’re visiting instead of jumping on the next plane to your next destination. If it’s possible, take the bus to go from one place to the next so you can enjoy the landscapes and really discover the country.

Choose the right time

Mass tourism has an impact on the local people.
The best example is Venice : the city suffers from the influx of tourists during the high season. Anyway, you can’t enjoy a place with as much pleasure when it’s crowded with tourists.
For sustainable tourism, choose to leave out of season. The locals won’t be dependent on the seasons.

Choose the place where you stay

Aevon travellers understand that : camping is the most eco friendly to travel.

Here is a picture from Bertrand in Colombia :

bike trailer

If you prefer to have a roof over your head, check out if your hotel has the HQE label (hight environmental quality) or choose to sleep in somebody’s home so you can share the energetic ressources.

Buy local

During your trips, don’t hesitate to buy souvenirs made on site by the locals, ideally in front of your eyes so you’re sure where the object comes from. This has a positive impact on local economy and the object you’ll bring back home will have more value.

Drink in a sustainable way

During his trip from Mexico to Ushuaïa, Bertrand chose the solution of the water filter so he didn’t have to buy water bootles. There are hundreds of different models, don’t hesitate to take the advice from a specialist before making your choice.

In a country with drinkable water, keep your flask or your bottle with you. In a country with non drinkable water and if you don’t have a water filter, buy big sizes bottles instead of small ones.

Do you have other ideas ?

What are the best spots to go to from November to February ?

South America

Argentina

Argentina is located in the South hemisphere, which means seasons are reversed. The country is so large that you can find climates completely different from North to South.
Let’s concentrate on the area around Buenos Aires. The hottest month of the year is January with days at 30°degrees. Prefer Spring to visit this part of the country, from September to December. It’s the rainy season from November but usually these quick showers don’t last.

Mexico

The months of October and November are the months to pick to go to Mexico. You’ll avoid the rainy season but also the heat from the arid plateaus in the North. Temperatures are also nice at this period on the seaside.

Australia

From December to January, it’s summer in the South of Australia. Temperatures are perfect to visit the area and enjoy nights in the open. However, you’d better avoid the center of the country, very hot. On the contrary, the North could be particularly rainy then.

Asia

Laos

The dry season lasts from November to March. Temperatures are nice and you don’t feel as much dampness. It’s the ideal time to visit and play the tourist.

Vietnam

There is a difference between the North and the South of the country.

Travelling with your dog

22 October 2019 | By | No Comments

Katrin always travels with her dog Napoli. She shares her travelling experience with a bike and trailer.

When Katrin first tested her UNO 100 trailer, she used it to carry her luggage. For her, it was the ideal solution to travel through the Alps with a tent and stuff. And when you’re staying in the same place for a few days, you just release the trailer from your bike and go for a ride.

Katrin chose the UNO 100 instead of the STD 100 because the frame of the UNO 100 was lower and her dog Napoli could easily climb inside by himself. The UNO 100 isn’t equipped with a shock absorber so Katrin used a thick mattress for Napoli to sit or lie on it.
On bumpy roads, Napoli still tends to sit instead of lying.

“I was very excited to try the trailer. Checking the world wide web for the combination „dog“ and „single-wheel trailer“, I couldn‘t find any comprehensive information about the pro and cons. The videos I saw did either show a dog, that was fixed tightly in his trailer or a much lightweight version of my 20 kg friend.

The UNO 100 is not originally designed to carry a dog but it does the job perfectly. Just be careful when your dog moves around, it might be a little unconfortable when you’re cycling fast. You need to get used to your passenger’s movements.

On Instagram, Katrin found this beautiful picture of Frida, riding in an Aevon STD 100. The owner chose a container to protect him when he is braking. It also protects the dog from the sun and the rain.
